Acquiring this kind of understanding is not easy. There are forces at play around us and within us that deter us from seeking this kind of self-awareness; forces that encourage us to stay with the safer, ready-made narrative we already have at hand.

But the unexamined life carries risk. 'If we do not make what is unconscious conscious, it will direct our lives and we will call it fate,' said Carl Jung.
